What is a National Wildlife Refuge?

In 1903, President Teddy Roosevelt created the first wildlife refuge in Pelican Island, FL with the intention of preserving wildlife heritage and preventing extinction of many species. The National Wildlife Refuge System provides fish, wildlife and plant conservation while maintaining public use in the form of hunting, fishing, wildlife observation and photography, environmental education and interpretation. Trained U.S. Fish and Wildlife Specialists make wildlife decisions based on the best available scientific information.
