Bringing Back Fish in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays:
A Rare Success Story

Featured Speaker: Marine Biologist Sandy Burk

Join Us at the Milton Theater on Saturday September 13th at 7:30 PM

Tickets ($5.00 Adults, $3Ages 12 & Under) Will Be On Sale At The Door

American shad were once one of the most important fish economically and ecologically to be found along the East Coast of the U.S., but were decimated by pollution, dams and overfishing. Learn how a unique partnership between the USFWS, schools and environmental groups is bringing back the American shad and other threatened fish in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays.

Sandy’s presentation will also cover the interesting story of how American shad and other fish populations support the ecosystems of refuges like Prime Hook NWR, including the bald eagle populations found at the refuge. Learn how the return of fish such as shad is connected to the comeback of the bald eagles.

Sandy will also familiarize you with newly introduced fish to our rivers, such as the fearsome looking snakehead fish.

Sandy Burk is a Marine Biologist (MS, UNC-Wilmington, 1989), science educator, conservationist and author of the award-winning book "Let The River Run Silver Again!" During the past twenty years, she has worked with universities, state and local agencies, and private organizations throughout the middle Atlantic region on aspects of marine biology and the monitoring, conservation, restoration and interpretation of freshwater and marine systems.
